The Bay Area Rainbow Symphony (BARS), a community-based symphonic orchestra for musicians of all gender identities and sexual orientations, today announced the opening of the 2009-10 season with “To Music”, a special Gala concert to be held at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on Saturday, Sept. 19th starting at 8:00 p.m. PT. Performing under the baton of newly appointed Artistic Director Daniel Canosa, “To Music” will be the first of a four-concert series showca sing the best of the Bay Area’s artists performing an ambitious repertoire unlike any other.
BARS is redefining the orchestral experience with passionate, entertaining programming that can quickly connect with multiple audiences. The gala concert program opens with famed American composer John Corigliano’s deeply moving and emotive “To Music” (1984). Corigliano, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his Symphony No. 2 (2001), is best known for his Academy Award-winning score to “The Red Violin” (1999) and Grammy Award-winning contemporary composition “Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan” (2009).
The gala program continues with Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” featuring acclaimed San Francisco-based pianist Daniel Glover. The evening concludes with a performance of Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 in G major. The Corigliano piece and guest pianist Daniel Glover are presented as part of the BARS LGBT Composer and Performing Artist Series.
