Refurbished.com, a New Online Directory Gives Consumers, Businesses and Institutions a Tool For Finding Refurbished or Used Merchandise in The Net!

(PRWEB) January 22, 2000

MIAMI, Fl., January 21, 2000 – Consumers and commercial entities who want to save money by buying refurbished or used merchandise are now able to find virtually any product through refurbished.com (http://www.refurbished.com), a web site designed exclusively to list the thousands of companies selling products in the secondary market, a multi-billion dollar industry.

Visitors at the site can search or browse through a myriad of products, divided by categories, including desktop computers, notebooks, telecom, home electronics, medical, musical instruments, office equipment, fitness, auto parts, point of sale, furniture, cellular phones and machinery. By Summer, Refurbished.com will add more important categories and sub-categories such as Appliances, Sports, Print Cartridges, Broadcasting and Photography. Finally, by year-end, it will lunch AuctionFurb – An online auction dedicated to refurbished products.

Expecting a huge traffic coming from non-US users, refurbished.com has established mirror domains in 15 key countries including important emerging nations such as Mexico (refurbished.com.mx), Brazil (refurbished.com.br), Argentina (refurbished.com.ar) South Africa (refurbished.co.za) and Romania (refurbished.co.ro). Beginning in June, 2000, refurbished.com will change some of these domains from mirrors to actual web sites, reflecting their local languages and Cultures.

“The impact of these new country specific sites will be tremendous, considering that these emerging markets are already responsible for the biggest chunk of the export of US refurbished goods, specially in the areas of machinery, farming, road building, medical and office (copiers and high speed printers.)” Said Marcos DaSilva, president of refurbished.com. “These local sites will list only companies that already have a local presence or are interested in exporting their products to that specific country.”

In that same line of creating more targeted sites, the company will also invest on developing a stronger presence in Europe with the further development of refurbished.co.uk (currently a mirror domain.)

The site is free for visitors but listed companies pay advertising fees, if they want their company listing to have some extras such as premium placement, highlights, icons, company directions… etc. Companies not willing to pay can still place their sites in the directory but will not have these extras. Advertising revenue will also come from banners placed throughout the site. Additionally refurbished.com will generate revenue by charging commission for the AuctionFurb feature, once it has been in place, next winter.

About Refurbished.com

Based in Miami, Florida, Refurbished.com is a site owned by American Systems, a privately held company. Its vision is to explore the power of the internet to facilitate users of this global network to access companies selling refurbished products of every kind, ranging from a simple print cartridge to a bulky road building tractor. The idea first started in 1996, when AmericanSystems had the refurbished.com site dedicated to selling refurbished computer equipment to South America. They soon realized that the site’s potential was tremendous if instead of selling their own product they open the site to every company in the secondary market industry.

MP3 Technology Bridging Internet Generation Gap

Global Survey From Angus Reid Group Finds Downloading Music Has Wide Appeal

Vancouver, June 9, 2000 – When it comes to downloading their favourite songs on MP3 files, both adults and youth are getting in the groove with the new technology. According to two recent global studies conducted by the Angus Reid Group Inc., 36% of all adult Internet users and 41% of teens and young adult Internet users have downloaded music from the Web in MP3 or similar formats.

Among teenaged Internet users aged 12-17 in ten recently surveyed countries, Angus Reid found that 44% had downloaded a music file, compared to 38% of the 18-24 year olds. And in an earlier Angus Reid global survey of adult Internet users, nearly one in three young adults, or 35% of 25-34 year olds and 33% of 35-44 year olds in the same countries had downloaded music files themselves. The practice has reached middle aged and older adult Internet users as well, with 23% of Internet users over age 45 reporting that they had downloaded music.

Once they download a music file, Internet users plan to come back for more – over 80% of adults who had downloaded a music file indicated they would be at least somewhat likely to do it again over the next 12 months. Charts available online

“Teens and young adults still represent the biggest share of this market, since a higher proportion of the them are online than adults in most countries,” said Clay Braziller, Vice President, Interactive Strategy for the Angus Reid Group. “But as adults go online, they are clearly starting to take up sampling and downloading for themselves.”

“This is one of the first technologies we have seen on the Net that adults are beginning to adopt as quickly as the youth,” Braziller added. “Teenagers might be in the driver’s seat in the American market, but in other parts of the world adults are also keen to download their choice of music.”

Globally, the incidence of music downloading among adult Internet users is highest in the developing countries of Asia and Latin America where as many as half of the Internet users surveyed had downloaded a music file, compared to one in three adult Internet users in the US (35%). In the ten countries where teenagers and young adults were surveyed, more than half of South Korean youth were downloading their favourite songs – more than teens in any other country surveyed to date. Among adult Internet users, the South Koreans, Argentines and Italians were the most likely to report downloading their favorite music from the Internet.

“Internet users are more excited about downloading MP3 or other music content in countries where there is not a well stocked music store in every local shopping mall,” Braziller said. “It all fits together when we see how popular downloading has become among users in a country like South Korea, which has one of the highest levels of Internet usage in Asia and is also one of the leading manufacturers of MP3 recording devices.”

So far, it appears that downloading MP3 files has not completely supplanted purchases of CDs, at least not over the Internet. Internet users who have downloaded music files are more likely than others to report that their last online purchase was a music CD. “We believe this is the beginning of a transitional stage in how music is being marketed and distributed,” Braziller said. “Music lovers in different age groups and different countries are quickly learning how take advantage of the vast selection now available in the market place. No one can really say what this multi-billion dollar industry will look like in two years, though it is clear its path will be driven both by the technology and the existing retailing infrastructure that is already out there.”

Methodology

Information on the use of MP3 among adult Internet users is from The Face of the Web, an Angus Reid Group study of Internet users in 34 countries completed earlier this year.

The information on the use of MP3 among youth is based on preliminary results from interviews from The Face of the Web – Youth conducted among 3,300 respondents in Argentina, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Spain, the UK and the USA in March. Interviewing was conducted by telephone, except in Argentina and South Korea where in-person interviews were used. All samples were nationally representative, except in Argentina where coverage was limited to urban areas. National samples each consisted of 300 12-24 year olds, except in the USA where 600 interviews were conducted. Results outside the USA are accurate within an error margin of no more than plus/minus 6 percentage points, 19 times out of 20; in the USA, the results are accurate within an error margin of no more than plus/minus 4 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The remainder of the Face of the Web -Youth interviewing is now underway in six additional countries, including Canada, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Urban Brazil, Mexico, and China. The Face of the Web – Youth is the companion survey to the Angus Reid Group’s annual Face of the Web survey that covers adult Internet awareness and usage in 34 countries across the world.

Dream Phone Call From Chayanne Will Go To Lucky Bidder

(PRWEB) March 21, 2001

DATE: March 16, 2001

FROM: Chayanne Fans For Nancy Committee

TITLE: “Dream Phone Call From Chayanne Will Go To Lucky Bidder”

When the auction is over and the bids are all in, some very lucky fan will be getting a phone call most fans only dream about. It will come from one of the brightest stars in the entertainment universe…Latin heart throb Chayanne.

Chayanne will donate the “fan call” to a benefit Internet auction that he really cares about, the Chayanne Fans For Nancy charity auction on eBay. The call will go to the highest bidder during the auction to benefit Nancy Ramos Esquivel which now through Sunday, March 21st (extended to this date due to overwhelming response). She is a 10 month old baby girl who desperately needs a liver transplant at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. Included in the auction will also be more than 200 Chayanne collectible items sent in by his fans everywhere and even the star’s own management company.

The exciting auction is being sponsored and coordinated by a committee, Chayanne Fans For Nancy, made up from three major fan clubs who support the career of the Puerto Rican entertainer on the Internet, Cafe Chayanne, Chayfans.org and La Isla Chayanne.

Chayanne discovered the Mexican girl when his own child, three year old Lorenzo, was hospitalized briefly with the flu. This caring, sympathetic superstar was so moved by her condition and the fact that her mother is very poor and cannot afford the whopping big $ 200,000 surgery bill, that he publicly asked his millions of fans around the world to help. As a result, the auction was born to kick off a fund raising campaign.

In addition to his recent appearances on two episodes of Fox’s TV hit Ally McBeal, and his 1998 US film debut in Dance With Me starring opposite Vanessa L. Williams, Chayanne’s colorful career spans some 21 years. He has sold over 5 million albums worldwide, and earned at least 20 platinum records and more than 50 gold. This past year, he won the Ritmo Latino Artist Of The Year Award and also for Best Video for his song Atado A Tu Amor. He was just recently nominated for the 2001 Billboard Latin Music Awards Hot Latin Tracks, for The Best Pop Album – “Simplemente” (his latest), and for Pop Track Of The Year. In addition, he has been nominated for Best Latin Artist in the prestigious Premios Gardel Awards in Argentina to be announced on April 18th.

Among the many items to be auctioned off will be autographed tour books, photographs, rare magazines, articles and clippings, concert T-shirts, albums, videos (including Linda Sara, the first film he made), and possibly a nice contribution from the Miami Marlin’s baseball team.

The auction can be found at

DMF2001: Borderless Art

By Fatima Lasay

http://digitalmedia.upd.edu.ph

MANILA, Philippines – As the United States launched the air attacks October 7 in Afghanistan, I had just welcomed three foreign guests at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) for the Digital Media Festival 2001 (DMF2001). I greeted Japanese film and video artist Takahiko Iimura and his art coordinator Kazuyo Yasuda at the Philippine Airlines Centennial Airport Terminal and fineArt forum’s (fAf) editor-in-chief Nisar Keshvani from Singapore at the NAIA Terminal 1. As I saw their faces for the first time, I affirmed that art (and not war) is borderless.

Our first stop was my mother’s home to meet with members of my family, then a quick visit to the Festival venue, the Corredor Gallery of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts (UPCFA). As Kazuyo handed me prints of Taka’s installation video and CD-ROM works to be mounted in the gallery, and as Taka sat before the iMac and started clicking on the mouse, I grew to believe more in the calming and unifying power of being passionate of a gift that bridges cultures.

Monday October 8, DMF2001 opened with ribbon-cutting ceremonies headed by UP Diliman Chancellor Emerlinda Roman with UPCFA Dean Virginia B. Dandan, Taka, Nisar and myself. Artists’ Talks with Jim Ayson, Ben Razon, Al Manrique and Lionel Valdellon followed, covering topics from digital photography, digital art to electronic music. Tuesday’s highlights were fineArt forum’s Travelling Screening Program, Nisar’s lecture, Taka’s video, film and work on CD-ROM, lunch with the college executive board, a workshop-demo on non-linear video editing, and a night at the UP Film Center to see “The Harp of Burma” and meet with the Japanese ambassador to the Philippines.

Wednesday, Ronnie Millevo conducted the DMF2001 Flash workshop, and we moved on to Manila for the Metropolitan Museum, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the GSIS Museum. We passed by the US Embassy and saw the protest rally, experienced heavy traffic, saw the slum areas, the street children, the high rise buildings, the shopping malls; we had Starbucks coffee, Chinese food, local buffet dinner, Lebanese lunch; while in the morning papers it’s always the war offshore, the conflict down south, anthrax, the political and economic crisis. It is easy to feel how swiftly and mindlessly the world moves around us and it is even easier to become trapped into its roundabout journey, to sit hypnotized as if in front of the screen watching a (very bad) movie. Then some of us snap out of that trance and live in a borderless world that respects and actively bridges cultures with the purpose of making life better through art.

Thursday and Friday of DMF2001 were devoted to videos – outstanding videos by mostly young artists from all across the globe. We screened Multimedia Art Asia Pacific’s “Oil Friction” and “Excess” videos from China and Australia; a second look at fAf’s one-hour program from Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Philippines, France, Taiwan and USA; we also looked at artists’ videos sent in from Romania, Greece, USA, and Australia. Throughout the Thursday screenings in the dimmed Corredor Gallery, the movement and scenes in Margaret Roberts’ “Cook East Cook West” installation video seemed constantly to serve as our window to the fast moving outside world.

The screenings, especially the fAf Screening Program which focused on rich cultural digital content, reinvigorated enthusiasm in video art at the University and encouraged many young video artists to pursue excellence in their work. With technical assistance from Computer Devices Corporation, I am currently working on a modernization plan for the video art elective course with Prof. Benjie Cabangis, aiming to acquire funding for new and better equipment for digital video editing in UPCFA. We all have our fingers crossed.

Also throughout the event, computers served artists’ CD-ROMs and websites from Brazil, Argentina, Germany, USA, Estonia, Australia, Hong Kong, Philippines, Romania, Slovenia, Thailand, Canada and Japan. Experimental and electronic music from Japan and Gavin Prior’s Lachrymal of Ireland played in the background.

Audience favorites include Australian Michelle Glaser, Andrew Hutchison and Marie-Louise Xavier’s CD-ROM-based interactive narrative “Juvenate” which transformed the hand’s movement on the mouse into a healing touch on the screen images. German Wilfried Agricola de Cologne’s “Moving Picture Collection” also sparked special interest particularly the piece”Divisionistic Approach”; and Brazilian Wilton Azevedo’s “Interpoesia” (with Philadelpho Menezes) introduced the new reading and authorship involved in interpoetry while Palm Poetry Reading, the UPCFA students’ entry to the 2nd Interpoetry Exhibition in Brazil, also presented in DMF2001, actively participated in the exchange of new ideas in the digital poetry genre. The portrait and the music in French Gustavo Kortsarz’s “Vanarsky / Toporgraphie” digital video also brought eyes and ears to attention.

The CD-ROM based works and Taka’s migration from film and video to CD-ROM (spanning over 35 years of dedicated work from analog to digital media) also served as challenge and inspiration to a number of video and filmmakers here. The possibilities of creating interactive work from film and video content provided the catalyst for getting more artists involved in interactive and digital technologies.

In DMF2001, we had also worked closely with the UP Computer Center through their director Prof. Roel Ocampo and the Diliman Network (DilNet) which provided fast and uninterrupted internet connection and live streaming video.

I am currently “de-stressing” myself, writing emails and postcards to all who helped in DMF2001, preparing to send out catalogs to all the artists involved in the event, putting the event aftermath little by little into the DMF2001 website. All the stress and hard work has been worth it and art has proven again to be a weapon for peace never comparable nor to be traded for bombs or a lackadaisical weekend watching CNN. And we move on to DMF2002 …

Guinness World Record film distributed to World Wide Audience

(PRWEB) June 22, 2002

MONTREAL, Canada—June21, 2002—Die Alive, a 2001 digital feature shot for a few hundred dollars, has signed a exclusive online distribution deal with HOLLYWOOD.COM, a website aimed at distributing movies online.

Die Alive (http://www.diealivethemovie.com) caught the media’s attention back in January when it was awarded the Guinness World Record for “Least Expensive Feature of all time”. The 100-minute film premiered last year at the FantAsia film festival in Montreal where it was enthusiastically acclaimed by critics and audience members alike.

“Die Alive is a comedy about filmmaking, shot documentary style” said JF Leduc, Die Alive’s director. “With its fantasy touches, CGI special effects and original score, Die Alive is vastly entertaining.”

Set to be projected again in both Montreal at FantAsia 2002 (which has just been postponed due to location problems) and in Argentina at CINENCUADRE 2002, Die Alive’s online distribution through HOLLYWOOD.COM will make it possible for a feature film produced with very little means and completed on a home computer to reach a worldwide audience. “The internet is the perfect medium for a digital feature to be broadcast, we’re happy to share Die Alive with the what is literally a worldwide audience” concluded Leduc.

Die Alive is set to premiere on Hollywood.com’s Indie Films Channel during their 3rd Hollywood.com Indie Film Festival (HIFF 2002) to be held online July 8 through July 28, 2002.

Hollywood.com is one of the leading movie-related sites on the Internet, featuring over one million pages of in-depth movie information, including movie descriptions and reviews, showtime listings, entertainment news, and an extensive multimedia library. Hollywood.com also features an extensive collection of independent films that can be viewed online for a monthly subscription fee. Hollywood.com benefits from a well-established visitor base, with approximately one billion annual impressions.

Die Alive is JF Leduc’s first digital feature, his previous work including short to medium length 16mm and 35mm films. Leduc is also an accomplished musician and composed orchestral music for some of his projects. Samples of his work can be heard at http://www.jfleduc.ca.tc

"The Latin Hurricane – Chayanne, releases his first DVD and a new English CD”

Dubbed “The Latin Hurricane” (PRWEB) October 10, 2002 -

Miami, Fla. –out concert after another, Puerto Rican singing star, Chayanne, has launched his first, long-awaited DVD. At the same time, he is taking an important step into the Anglo pop music market with a new single — the English version of his hit song, “Y Tu Te Vas”(“You Walk Away”).

The DVD of his latest “Grandes Exitos” (Greatest Hits) album was released in the United States on September 17th, and is currently being released in Mexico, Argentina, and other important global markets over the next few weeks. Like the album, it contains a compilation of videos of Chayanne’s best hits of the past, 13 videos in all.

Long awaited by thousands of fans the world over, the DVD also contains an interview, photo gallery, biography, discography and “behind the scenes” looks at the star, and other high points of his 22 year career as an entertainer. The DVD is a production of Sony Music International/LAR-Miami DVD’s. It is currently available in music outlets across the country and on the Internet including Wherehouse Music, Amazon.com, Best Buy, and CDNOW.com. Grandes Exitos DVD is also available in VHS form at the same outlets.

Chaf Enterprises, Chayanne’s management company located in Miami, Fla., also announced that he has recorded the English version of his Latin hit, “Y Tu Te Vas”, a single that was a chart-topper across the country for 21 weeks and has been on the Top 10 list for 30 weeks, on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks. It’s the opening song on his Grandes Exitos album, which also includes two other new songs, “Quisiera Ser” (“He Wanted To Be”) and “Torero” (“The Bullfighter”), currently holding down the top selling slot in many Latin countries today.

To be released by Sony Discos to the American mainstream, Anglo, radio stations within the next few weeks, the new English single, titled You Walk Away will mark Chayanne’s first totally non-Hispanic pop entry since beginning his musical career as a child star singing with the Latin group, Los Chicos (The Boys). Lauded as being one of the best Latin pop performers of today, the dynamic singer has more than 50 gold and 20 platinum Spanish albums already to his credit.

In the midst of his 5-month long “World Tour 2002” (following a highly successful 10-city appearance schedule in the U.S.), Chayanne was asked recently in Spain, why he feels the need to record in English. The 34-year-old star said, ” No, it’s not that it is needed, but it is important to embrace more languages, to extend to more markets. I have also recorded in Italian, French and in Portuguese…to sing in English I see like an expansion of my career.”

Chayanne, this darkly handsome, muscular, singer/actor/dancer is best known in the U.S. for making a big splash with his steamy starring role in the 1998 Columbia Pictures film, “Dance With Me”, (Bailar Conmigo) co-starring the beautiful Vanessa L. Williams and the former singer-turned-actor, Kris Kristofferson. Reruns on cable TV brought even more Anglo fans to his court. This is true especially on the Internet where there are three major web sites of fans, Chayfans.org, Islachayanne.org and Cafechayanne.com, dedicated to spreading the word about their idol and his career, in addition to a Sony Discos site.

Chayanne was also highly praised last season, when he appeared in two episodes of the popular Fox TV series, Ally McBeal. He thrilled his Hispanic fans last season, by starring in a soap opera, novela series,”Provocame” (“You Provoke Me”) on Latin television in many different countries around the world. In addition, he was recently nominated for the Top Male Singer of the Year award for “Y Tu Te Vas,” in the “Los Premios Oye,” ( What You Hear Award or The Best Sound Award ) to be given out on Nov. 26, by the Mexican Association of Producers of Fonogramas, (AMPROFON) and CIE, a television spectacles company.

When Chayanne completes his world tour in the fall, he is expected to return to the recording studio to produce a new crossover album, this one containing several songs in English.

INTERNATIONAL DESIGNERS GRACE NEW YORK’S CATWALK

(PRWEB) February 21, 2003

On February 6, 2003, USA International Fashion Shows introduced four fashion designers to the New York City market. The runway shows of Clive Rundle, Jorge Isaac, Fabrizio Celleri and Lourdes Atencio took place at the luxurious Manhattan Penthouse on Fifth Avenue before an audience of fashion buyers, a select group of VIPs and members of the international press representing publications from Japan, Germany, Argentina, the Dominican Republic and many other countries. As a direct result of their participation in the event, two of the designers are already in negotiation with one of the USA’s largest retailers. Photos, videos and slide presentations showcasing the fashion collections are now available to member of the press and buyers not present at the event.

A high level of cooperation was in evidence among the staff, designers, models, volunteers and producer of the shows. “At one point,” according to Andres Aquino, producer of the event, “it seemed that everyone — including the designers — were working with everyone else to make the shows a complete success. There is an incredibly high energy level,” Mr. Aquino noted. A number of members of the press expressed their enthusiasm about the shows. As one editor put it, “The USA International Fashion Shows are needed in New York to bring out fresh talent from other countries… it compliments the existing shows that we see during fashion week.”

The February show was just a taste of what will be the beginning of an international event of great magnitude in the fashion industry in the USA. A number of designers have already signed up for the September 2003 shows that promises to be the first truly international runway fashion event in New York City with the participation of designers from around the world.

The designers presented:

JORGE ISAAC. A native of Ecuador, this talented fashion designer was inspired early on by the natural beauty and color palette surrounding him. In 1991, Jorge moved to New York City to follow his dream of becoming a successful fashion designer. His premiere collection for Fall 2003 is a product of Jorge’s fashion sensibility and creativity in a mélange of pieces designed to complement a woman’s natural sensuality. “I believe that beauty lies within… Just give it a nudge to bring it forth…”

FABRIZIO CELLERI. A well-established, award-winning designer in his native Ecuador, Fabrizio Celleri is a former fashion consultant for TC Television and Ecuavisa. He opened his first boutique in Guayaquil in 1997. In 1998, Fabrizio was invited by the French consulate to present his collection along with students of the Ecole Bercole in Paris. He has presented his collections throughout South America, France and the United States. Fabrizio Celleri’s designs are sold at Oxygen and Nuriel in Miami, as well as through his New York showroom.

CLIVE RUNDLE. Born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa, Clive Rundle is an established South African designer. Drawn to fashion early in life, Clive studied his craft in Johannesburg. In 1986, he was invited to show a small collection at the Coer Des Beaux Arts in France with other young designers. Soon after, his label was hanging in more than 50 stores in South Africa and Clive decided to launch his own boutique. Clive Rundle’s collection is sponsored in part by world-renowned Swarovski crystals.

Clive attributes his primary influences to beauty, nature, complexity of construction, fabric, color, composition, art, sculpture and music. The essence of his designs is a complicated garment structure, which is an extension of his entire thought process. The language of form, line, color and texture is his means of communication.

LOURDES ATENCIO. A native of the Dominican Republic, Lourdes Atencio is a visionary designer with a sophisticated taste for fashion and the fine arts. Lourdes’s designs are progressive yet elegant, appealing to glamorous women of all ages. In 1991, Lourdes launched the Avant-Elite design label that caters to an exclusive clientele including top models, media personnel and socialites. Her designs have been featured on the Despierta America and Primer Impacto television programs. Aero Mar and Falcon Airlines have commissioned Lourdes to design their work and leisure uniforms.

Since 1995, Lourdes’s designs have been featured in numerous beauty pageants and fashion shows. Prestigious London publisher Co & Bear recently featured some of Lourdes’s stunning designs in the hefty coffee table book I Do: 100 Years of Wedding Fashion. Selected for their exquisite workmanship and innovative spin on traditional form, photos of Lourdes’s wedding gowns appear in the book along with those of top designers including Christian Dior, Betsey Johnson, Yves Saint Laurent and many others. For the new millennium, Lourdes Atencio (Avant-Elite Designs) and Peter of London Salons and Spa have entered into a strategic alliance to launch new designs for the woman of the new era: independent, progressive, educated and highly sophisticated.

The next series of shows are scheduled for September 7-10, 2003 in New York City. For the September 2003 event, USA International Fashion Shows will present the first International Fashion Designer Award to an established fashion designer who is distinguished by his/her creativity, accomplishments and contributions to social and business endeavors.

Negotiations are currently underway with a number of prominent companies in a variety of fields regarding sponsorship of the event. Many businesses are recognizing the valuable marketing potential of the event for their respective products and services, including travel-related services, cosmetics and hair care products, print publications, liquor and soft drinks, and fashion-related companies such as fabric, notion, jewelry and accessories businesses.

The event is an Andres Aquino production sponsored by Fashion Syndicate Press. Fashion Syndicate Press photographers have covered designer runway shows in South America, Canada, New York, South Africa and Europe since 1997, with fashion photography and articles appearing in hundreds of magazines, newspapers and books worldwide. The company owns over 25 web sites, one of which — fashionshowroom.com — receives some 5 million hits per month making it one of the most visited fashion web sites. This formidable Internet presence greatly helps in marketing the designers participating in the USA International Fashion Shows. The background of producer Andres Aquino includes over 20 years in international business, fashion photography and event production.

PERSIAN CENTER BRIDGES “FROM IRAN TO ARGENTINA” WITH THE IRANIAN

GUITAR DUO

Event at San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre on Sept. 14,2003 dedicated to the victims of Sept. 11, 2001

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — September 3, 2003 —- Persian Center (http://www.persiancenter.org)proudly presents a night of music and dance, featuring the Iranian Guitar Duo, Babak and Pedram Falsafi (http://iranianguitarduo.com/),Sunday,September 14, 2003, at San Francisco’s Herbst theater http://www.performances.org/theaters/herbst.asp).

The brothers plan to shatter preconceived notions of the sounds of the classical guitar, as they take the audience on a journey “From Iran to Argentina”, with intricately woven music from these regions. For the traditional Persian music lovers, there will also be a complex composition for two guitars and Iranian drums (tombak & daff) played by Kamran Modirian, accompanied by Niosha Dance Academy (http://www.niosha.com).

The visual delights will continue as tango dancers Sandor and Parissa (http://www.sandorparissa.com/) perform to the Iranian Guitar Duo’s romantic sounds from South America.

Tickets are available through City Box Office at 415-392-4400 or

http://www.cityboxoffice.com.

Babak and Pedram Falsafi formed the Iranian Guitar Duo after many years exploring Iranian and Middle Eastern music on the classical guitar. Babak studied the guitar in Tehran with renowned guitar teacher Bagher Moazen and later at the Prague Conservatory of Music with Milan Zelenka, while Pedram immigrated to the United States and became a lifetime guitar and composition student of Dusan Bogdanovic. The brothers, who reunited in San Francisco, shared that “traveling, learning foreign languages, and meeting many artists worldwide has helped us appreciate different cultures, traditions and art forms, and has had an impact on our music.” Although influenced by numerous classical music recordings including Bach’s Cantatas and Mozart’s Concertos, they remain eager to learn more about other styles of music such as popular and folk.

From traditional to modern music and dance, the evening ventures to create dialogue and bring understanding and appreciation among various cultures, without the spoken word. This event is dedicated to the victims of the September 11th, 2001 and all other innocent victims of violence in history. Shahin Tabrizi, Persian Center Board Member, commented that “lives have been shortened and dreams have been shattered because of the belief that taking an innocent life in pursuit of one’s own ideology is justified. Let us hope that there will be a day when we realize that there is no cause greater, no commitment more important, and no aspiration more precious than honoring a life.”

The Persian Center is a non-profit organization with a mission to create an environment in which to conduct social, cultural, educational, and recreational activities designed to strengthen the sense of identity and integrity of all Iranians and Iranian descendants, and to engage individuals interested in or related to Persian community and culture.

The Gotan Project Brings Their Dazzling Tango Electronica to UCLA Live, with L.A.’s daKAH Hip-Hop Orchestra, Oct. 18

(PRWEB) October 10, 2003

LOS ANGELES— The Paris-based Gotan Project brings its soulful and fiery fusion of classic tango melodies, dub and electronica to UCLA’s Royce Hall at

8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003. Presented by UCLA Live, The Gotan Project will be joined by Los Angeles’ 50-plus member daKAH Hip-Hop Symphonic Orchestra. This performance is approximately three hours with an intermission. For tickets call 310-825-2101 or visit http://www.UCLAlive.org.

In addition to Gotan’s principal members, including DJ/producer Philippe Cohen Solal, DJ Christophe Mueller on computers, and tango guitarist Eduardo Makaroff, the lineup features Cristina Vilallonga, vocals; Serge Amico, bandonéon; Arnaldo Zanelli, piano; and Line Kruse, violin.

With sales currently in excess of 600,000 copies worldwide, Gotan Project’s acclaimed “La Revancha Del Tango” was released domestically on Beggars XL in April 2003, featuring their jazz-house hit “Triptico.” Their remix of Sarah Vaughn’s classic, “Whatever Lola Wants” on the “Verve Remixed 2” compilation, featuring today’s greatest DJs remixing the legends of jazz, has enjoyed much airplay on alternative music programs. In addition, their music will be featured in the first episode of “CSI Miami” on CBS this fall.

These French dance producers turned world music crusaders are well on their way to invading the record boxes of DJs around the world. Left-looking spinners including Gilles Peterson, Thievery Corporation, Peter Kruder, UFO, Jazzanova, Rainer Trüby, Herbert and Mr. Scruff have all been championing Gotan’s continent-crossing fusion of tango, dub and beats since their debut single “El Capitalismo Foraneo” was released in January, 2000.

A Los Angeles phenomenon, daKAH is the world’s largest hip-hop orchestra featuring 58 musicians and almost every instrument imaginable. Led by Maestro Double G, daKAH has featured many of hip-hop’s greatest musicians including Macy Gray, Nikka Costa and members of the Breakestra and Black Eyed Peas.

Like a strange, mongrel beast, dance club music will feed off anything: salsa, Brazilian samba, Afrobeat, and now tango. In its native Argentina, the tango is the music of revolution, both sexual and political. It is Argentina’s pop, jazz and its folk music all rolled into one. It’s music that came from the barrios and swept the high societies of Europe in the early 20th century. The second tango invasion came much later: in the late 1970s, when the country’s right wing military junta forced many left wing musicians to flee and find refuge in more liberal cities like Paris.

“There has always been a big tango scene in Paris,” says Gotan founder Philippe Cohen Solal. Indeed the word Gotan itself is just “tango” said in Buenos Aires’ Verlan slang—the Argentinean underworld’s equivalent of old fashioned London argot like backslang. “In Verlan they use the word Gotan to mean tango,” explains Cohen Solal, “there was a tango club in Paris called Gotan in the 60’s.”

Employing some of the finest tango musicians in Europe, Cohen Solal and fellow Gotan projectors Mueller and Makaroff allowed them to freestyle around a theme—then returned to the studio to edit the jams into a seductive tango dub.

“We are not scared of treating or filtering the musicians,” they say. “We’re ‘using’ electronic tricks to make the tango more accessible and that’s why it works. We don’t want to do deep house, with long solos on top of that—it’s really boring. The improvisation has to come back to real melodies and bring melodies back into dance music. We love dub, we love soundtrack music, and we wanted to discover something surprising that nobody would expect.”

With cover versions of the theme from “Last Tango In Paris,” and a dubbed-out take on Frank Zappa’s “Chunga’s Revenge,” this is willfully weird but strangely compelling music that ignores both geographical and musical borders.

Cohen Solal has spent the last 10 years working as a musical supervisor, collaborating with film directors such as Lars Von Trier (on “Europa”), Jean-Baptiste Mondino and Nikita Yolande Zauberman (“Clubbed to Death”), before hooking up with mutual Mueller and veteran Argentinean émigré and musician Makaroff.

A veteran guitarist and singer who has already recorded 12 albums, Makaroff has written and played on film soundtracks and presented TV shows in his native Buenos Aries. He came to Paris in 1990, where he’s fronted the tango group Tango Mano and conducted the orchestra for the Paris tango club Dancing de la Coupole.

“We wanted to work together for a long time,” explains Cohen Solal, “and then Eduardo made me discover the really percussive, groovy side of Argentinean music. We wanted to do something we really loved, with no compromise or thinking about selling to others.”

Drawing upon influences from jazz, funk, European classical, hip-hop, rock and Latin music, daKAH Hip-Hop Orchestra has won critical raves and a loyal following for their recordings and live performances since its inception in 1999. Musically speaking, the sound is like a spice rack, featuring several flavors, aromas, herbs, seasonings, and applications. Orchestral instruments swing on dance rhythms to create the genre-defining sound of symphonic hip-hop. Individuals bring their unique talent to the center stage, while Maestro Double G directs the traffic. Most importantly, they have demonstrated a previously uncharted potential for both the hip-hop house party and the symphony orchestra.

This event is supported by the Henry Mancini Tribute Fund at UCLA.

Tango Art Event Turns Up The Heat - With a Latin Beat.

Ottawa, Canada (PRWEB) January 16, 2004

The Tango’s origins go back to the 19th century, somewhere around the 1870’s, when it was born and developed in the working class suburbs outside the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Today, Tango is a world in itself – sensual, poignant, and often symbolizing Latin culture – we see it represented in music, dance, song, poetry and art. It is an extraordinary phenomenon of customs, celebrated around the world.

In honour of the season, Eleonora Dufault and Janet Wilkinson of Mondo d’ Arte have assembled an intriguing collection of monotypes, watercolours, acrylics, and mixed media from four recognized Argentine artists: Ida Olijavetsky, Juan Manuel Sanchez, Nora Patrich and Violeta Borisonik.

Tango demonstrations will be danced by Brigitte and Francis Caron, owners and instructors at Siempre Tango. They’ve extended a warm welcome to visitors, and, say the Carons, “Those attending the event, who also like to Tango, are invited to remain and dance after 9 pm.”

So whether you love the dance, the art, the people or the just the pulse of all things Latin, the event promises an unusual escape from the cold.

Park anywhere in the Byward Market, and if you hunt patiently, street parking is free on Saturday. Look for a single door on the north side of Rideau (just east of The Bay). You’ll climb 3 flights of stairs, but – it’s worth it. Please bring indoor footwear; they’re “a must” for the hardwood floor.

Global Mechanic’s executive producer Matthew Charde announced today the signing of two veteran animation directors to its roster. Dan Sousa and Rich Ferguson-Hull both will join Global Mechanic and be represented for commercial production on a worldwide basis. This news comes on the heels of the studio going bi-coastal; in late 2003, Global Mechanic opened a studio in the United States in order to serve its increased business in commercial, television production, and independent film work. With facilities in both coasts, as well as a bolstered roster of talent, Global Mechanic can produce any type of commercial, television or film project from its Vancouver headquarters as well as from its Boston studios.

Daniel Sousa has been directing commercials and films for nearly 10 years. He graduated from The Rhode Island School of Design where he studied painting and animation. He spent 6 years at Olive Jar Studios (Boston and Los Angeles) as a Director and Animator then directed freelance for Circle Studios. Meanwhile, he taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, co-founded Handcranked Film Projects (http://www.handcrankedfilm.com, a collaborative of New England film-makers), and produced his award-winning short, Minotaur (1999.). Currently he is teaching at RISD and working on a new independent film which is being funded by LEF Foundation’s Moving Image Fund. Daniel animates in cel, drawn, 3D CGI, and mixed-media.

Dan’s commercial directing credits include six Nestle Quik Bunny commercials produced for McCann-Erickson and many of the “Marsha Campaign” commercials for Marshall’s and Hill Holliday. In addition, Dan has directed individual spots for Kemper Financial Services for Foote Cone Belding, and numerous promos, shorts and IDs for Cartoon Network. His work includes a huge portfolio of character animation work with the likes of Bugs Bunny, The Power Puff Girls, and various other Looney Toon and Hanna-Barbera favorites. Dan has been the key animator on commercials for Coke, Samsung, NBC, Frito Lay, Kraft, and Pringles. He has animated with voice talent that includes Tracey Ullman and John Lithgow and shot in locations throughout the US, in Argentina and in South Africa.

Rich Ferguson-Hull has been animating as long as he can remember- but has been directing commercials since 1993. He attended The School of The Museum of Fine Arts and received his degree from Wesleyan University where he studied both animation and film. He spent 8 years as a Director and Animator at Olive Jar Studios (Boston and Los Angeles), half of which he served as the studios’ associate creative director. Rich works in cel, 3D CGI and Stop Motion.

Rich’s commercial directing credits include work for Kraft, Pillsbury, Staples and Citibank, for the ad agencies J. Walter Thompson, Leo Burnett, Euro RSCG and Young & Rubicam. In addition Rich has directed and animated work for both Universal Studios and Disneyland Theme Parks, two animation pilots for Cartoon Network and one for Fox Networks, as well as numerous network promos and IDs for TCM and Cartoon Network. Additional credits for Rich include director and key animator on projects for Coke, PBS’s Between the Lions, Monster.com and many others for agencies which include Arnold Worldwide, Lowe, and FCB. In addition to Rich’s commercial work, he currently is directing episodic television programming.

Bruce Alcock, Global Mechanic’s founder and Creative Director is “thrilled with the addition of these two guys. With both Dan and Rich working with us, we have now completely rounded out our animation offerings as a production company. They are two of the best cel and character animators working today- add in their talents as directors and experience in long-format production to the team we have in place and oh, the places we’ll go!”

Dan and Rich will join the roster that already includes Bruce Alcock, Marv Newland, Nathaniel Akin, and Ann Marie Fleming.
