Radio Caracol Honored with 2005 Premios Ondas

Radio Caracol 1260 AM (WSUA), a leading Spanish-language radio station in Miami, was honored last month (Nov. 3) at the 52nd Annual Premios Ondas award gala ceremony for their excellent and continuous live news coverage of Hurricane Katrina. Tomas Martinez, Vice President and General Manager of Radio Caracol, and Jose Antonio Ponseti, Program Director, were in Barcelona, Spain to accept the award in central Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Lyceu opera house. The event, organized by radio group Cadena SER through Radio Barcelona, the longest-running radio station in Spain, recognizes professionals, companies and bodies of work that originate in the national and international radio, television, cinema and music industry.

Radio Caracol won for Best Program, Professional or Radio or Television Station in the Latin American radio and television category, and was the only U.S-based media outlet acknowledged this year among multiple radio station candidates that entered. The Spanish station was recognized for its special reporting and on-the-scene pre- and post-coverage of Hurricane Katrina. Jose Antonio Ponseti and producer/reporter Madeline Prendes spent a week in the Louisiana area filing live news reports, as well as producing Efectos Secundarios (Secondary Effects), a daily one-hour program, which airs Monday through Friday, from 11AM to 12PM.

Radio Caracol is Miamis leading Hispanic talk radio station. It is part of the W Radio Network of Stations, owned and operated by GLR, Grupo Latino de Radio, Latin Americas largest radio group.
