Havana Film Festival in New York 2004 celebrates 5 years of sucess April 22 - 29 2004

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 7, 2004

Jacobo Morales is one of the most influential artists in Puerto Rico. He became a legend when his movie, Lo que le paso a Santiago (Whatever Happened to Santiago), was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film. A central goal of the festival is to showcase both new and classic films and, to that end, HFFNY will premiere features by: Miguel Coyula (Red Cockaroaches, Cuba); Rigoberto Lopez (Scent of Oak, Cuba); Alejandro Chomski (Today and Tomorrow, Argentina), selected to participate at Cannes Film festival’s prestigious program, “Un Certain Regard”; Marcel Sisniega (One or the Other, Mexico); Carlos Gerbase (Tolerance, Brazil); Jorge Furtado (The Man Who Copied, Brazil), awarded the Grand Coral for Best Actor (Lazaro Ramos) at the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana in 2003; Ignacio Ortiz (Bedtime Fairy Tales for Crocodiles, Mexico), winner of 7 Mexican Ariel Awards in 2002; and Elias Jimenez (The House In Front, Guatemala). Guy Michetti To Perform At New York City Auto Show

(PRWEB) April 11, 2004

Michetti (http://www.guymichetti.com) was picked, along with other independent musicians, to play at the event by the premier online company http://www.sonicbids.com that puts venues and independent artists together. His new and eagerly awaited album “A New York City Life” is near completion. The release date will be announced shortly. In the meantime, Michetti’s EP I’m Coming Home , released at the end of last year, has been selling well online and at live performances and has generated record company interest.

As an independent musician, Guy relies on the internet as well as live performances to get his music heard. His music is available on his own, web site http://www.guymichetti.com and several other online music portals such as http://www.songplanet.com , http://www.soundclick.com and he has been a featured artist at http://www.mp3unsigned.com

The song I’M COMING HOME on the EP of the same name, (available at CD BABY http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/michetti) about a wounded soldier coming home from Iraq, has generated almost unbelievable global interest. The song has been downloaded and streamed by people from an ever increasing list of countries:

Said Michetti, “I’m still so surprised that so many people from around the world accessed this song online and actually took the time to order it as well. The internet is an amazing thing when it works!”

A fellow singer/songwriter Jeff Crandall described Michetti’s music when he heard it over at http://www.garageband.com this way:

It’s like a bunch of great rock singers and bands rolled into one. This song reminds me of Bob Geldof, The Clash, Bob Dylan, The Waterboys, The Hothouse Flowers, Tom Petty, and on and on. But it doesn’t sound derivative of any, just reminiscent – like you belong in their company. I really love your voice. I’m sure this is the best vocal I’ve heard on Garageband (and I’ve heard a lot of them). The vocalist really permeates and carries this piece, so much so that I’m not thinking about any of the other parts. When I do stop to think about them, they are obviously well-played, thoughtful parts. Everything fits great. The mix, arrangement, lyrics, and production are all fantastic. Overall, this is one of the most perfect songs, in all aspects, that I’ve heard on Garageband. It deserves to be on the “Best Of” albums of any of the artists I mentioned at the top of this review. High marks all around! I wish you the very, very best! Jeff Crandall http://www.ashlandnetwork.com/jeffcrandall

New School, New York City TANGO & BEYOND: The World of Tango Songs

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) October 16, 2005

Called by her many fans, “Anna Magnani with voice,” Maria Cangiano, originally from Argentina, has a unique voice within Argentine a new generation of Tango singers. Tango is much more than the lusty and sensuous dance familiar in the United States and around the world. Since the genres birth among the lower classes of Buenos Aires at the turn of the 19th century, it comprised not only music and dance, but a rich lyric tradition. Tango songs portray humankind conflicts from gender issues, ethnic stereotypes, and class conflicts to the plain old heartache of love in all its forms. Trained as an opera singer, Maria Cangiano combines drama and singing in her interpretation of old and new Tango songs as “mini-operas” or melodramatic stories. As the Brooklyn press said, The depth and power of Maria Cangianos woeful, soulful voice brings the nostalgic nature of the music to life.

Her musicians -some of the best exponents of new tango in the United States- are four incredible international performers with a rich background in classical, jazz and tango music: Octavio Brunetti (piano), the winner of the New York Tango International Competition, David Hodges (bandoneon), Pedro Giraudo (Bass), and Victor Prieto (accordion), called the accordion genius (Daily News). The result is an original “global tango,” that mixes traditional and avant-garde tango trends with the musicians’ backgrounds and life experiences.

TANGO & BEYOND, premiered at Joe’s Pub last Spring, is a soulful journey through classic tango songs, its characters and themes from the 1930s to the present. It includes some of the most famous tango songs from the golden age of tango (1930-50s), as well as, the new tango of Astor Piazzolla (1960s). This repertoire shows different aspects of the poetics of tango, ranging from the 1930s well-know sentimental and realistic ones, the 1940-50s more abstract and symbolic to the surrealistic tangos of the 60s and 70s. Maria Cangiano’s soulful interpretation of the songs and the musical arrangements explore the melodramatic nature of the music, as well as, the complex and rich relationship between classic, jazz and tango music.

NEW YORK (PRWEB) November 16, 2005

Fashion show producer Andres Aquino steps before the audience wearing a Chinese inspired jacket by Venezuelan fashion designer Carlos Benguigui and in a resonating voice, without the benefit of a microphone, says, I have a special announcement to make An expectant air settles over the audience.

At todays Champagne Fashion Brunch we are pleased to welcome a special guest. You have seen her in musical films such as Oklahoma, The Music Man and Carousel. She won an Academy Award for her role in Elmer Gantry and has her own start on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, She is loved by millions for her role as the mother on TVs The Partridge Family and in real life she is mom to actor and entertainer David Cassidy and writer, producer, and actor Shaun Cassidy, and actor and singer Patrick Cassidy Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome actress Shirley Jones and her daughter-in-law Melissa Cassidy. The audience breaks into thunderous applause and Ms. Jones stands to take a bow.

The audience is delighted to be able to enjoy a couture fashion show and delicious brunch in the company of an entertainment industry legend.

When Second Wind Dreams, a Canadian organization, contacted Mr. Aquino about granting a dream to octogenarian Mary Witt, Mr. Aquino responded with an enthusiastic yes and set to work. He contacted Russian-born designer Lilia Berzon and asked her if she would be interested in making a special couture gown to be modeled on the runway for a special lady. Today, we are happy to welcome a very special model to our runway at the Champagne Fashion Brunch, so began the producer of the event soon after appeared a model who had been waiting over 71 years from her last casting call to parade down the catwalk.

Mary Witt, 86, had always dreamed of being in a New York fashion show. She wore a beautiful blue-green gown designed by Lilia Berzon. Escorted in her wheelchair by a dashing male model, Ms. Witt waved at everyone as she came down the runway making her long-awaited yet triumphant debut. Mary Witt came to New York at age the age 16 and was turned down for runway modeling because at only 59, she was an inch too short of the agency standard at the time. But in August of 2005, during a whirlwind 24 hours, Ms. Witt was featured on the CBS Sunday Morning show, UPN 9 News, in the New York Daily News and most importantly, she was the darling of the catwalk. New York Tango Festival Gets New Yorkers Dancing with Strangers

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 25, 2008

The New York Tango Festival gets New Yorkers dancing with strangers in October during Hispanic Heritage Month with two shows of Argentine Tango, and a series of master workshops and milongas (tango dance parties) over Columbus weekend. The Festival is an opportunity to see international tango stars on the New York stage, study with master teachers, and dance with the best tango dancers in the City and from around the world. Last year’s Festival brought together over 1,000 dancers from 41 countries. The festival is produced by Mariela Franganillo, one of the most prominent tango artists in New York.

Thousands of New Yorkers are discovering that tango is the perfect antidote to the endless rush and impersonal face of life in the City because Tango brings people together. Most people know tango from the stage and television, but the true heart of tango is social dancing. Tango connects people intimately in every dance, it brings people into their local community of tango dancers, and it connects travelers with tango communities that have sprouted in cities around the world.

“Tango has a powerful effect on New Yorkers because instead of avoiding eye contact, we dance heart to heart in a hug-like embrace,” said Mariela Franganillo, the Festival producer. “Tango satisfies the basic human need for physical contact and the close mirroring of leader and follower stirs the emotions. Since tango tradition is to change partners after three songs, tango dancers make a lot friends.” There are over 2,000 regular tango dancers in New York and every night you can dance at three or four venues around the City.

“We hold the Festival on Columbus Weekend during Hispanic Heritage Month because it is a time when Latin Americans celebrate the first meeting of European and South American cultures,” said Ms. Franganillo. “I am very proud that a simple dance from my home country of Argentina has spread around the world and brings people together regardless of language, race or culture.”

TANGO NOIR:

The Festival opens October 4 with the premiere of Tango Noir at Peter Norton Symphony Space, sponsored by the World Music Institute. Tango Noir is a new show conceived and directed by Mariela Franganillo that combines humor with the dark side of tango. The performance features four breathtaking dancers: Los Hermanos Macanas (the brothers Enrique and Guillermo Di Fazio), who are one of the hottest acts in the international tango scene and making their New York theatrical debut; Junior Cervila of Tango Argentino fame; and Mariana Parma of Swango and a 2008 US tango champion. The musical ambience is created by singer Hector Pablo Pereyra and an ensemble led by Gustavo Casenave

MASTER WORKSHOPS & MILONGAS:

The heart of the Festival is a series of master workshops and milongas over Columbus Weekend. The Festival brings top tango teachers directly from Buenos Aires to New York including:

Fabian Salas who danced in the movie, the Tango Lesson, and is recognized as one of the fathers of Tango Nuevo, a modern style of tango dancing, with his lovely partner Maria Paz Giorgi;
Pablo Villarraza & Dana Frigoli, stars of The Motorcycle Diaries and one of today’s most important tango couples who are known for the Conceptual Tango Technique and school they created;
Gabriel Andres Misse of the famed show Tango x 2 who is acclaimed for his traditional tango style and his stunning partner Analia Centurion.
These are important teaching and performing couples who rarely visit New York. The Festival gives New Yorkers an opportunity to experience the best tango of Buenos Aires without a plane ride.

TANGO CONNECTION:

The Festival closes October 18-19 when Mariela Franganillo’s company of tango dancers, musicians and a singer perform Tango Connection: A Lover’s Discourse, at Queens Theatre in the Park as part of their Latino Cultural Series and Festival.

This program of love and partnership, which ranges from passionate to comical and from tender to tormented, “conjures some real chemistry in closely linked, swirling duos and taut, whiplash footwork.” – The New York Times

About the New York Tango Festival:

The New York Tango Festival brings world-class tango to the New York stage, classroom and dance floor every Columbus Weekend. Produced by Mariela Franganillo, one of most prominent tango artists in New York, the Festival celebrates the beautiful connection that tango creates between people, by bringing tango stars to the New York stage, bringing the best teachers from Buenos Aires to teach master workshops, and by bringing out New York’s best dancers to milongas (tango dances).
