Day 1: Morning arrival and reception at the airport and transfer to hotel where we will meet the oenologist who will accompany us throughout the tour. At noon we will have lunch in a typical restaurant during which we will begin to familiarize ourselves with the local wines. After lunch and after enjoying a traditional siesta (nap) we will take a city tour during which we will try to immerse ourselves in the local culture, a key aspect in understanding the wine production process. Our tour will end with an introductory lecture lasting about two hours, in which our oenologist will explain the technique of wine tasting and will introduce us to the world of wine, wine production techniques, the importance of the cork and the correct way to handle a glass in order to taste wine. After the lecture, optional dinner with guided wine tasting. Return to hotel.

Day 2: After breakfast we depart for the fertile Mendoza oasis where we will visit the Rural and López wineries. We shall have lunch at the Agricola, Family Zuccardi winery where we will enjoy a selection of delicious Argentinean meat (goat, veal, pork and lamb) accompanied by house wines and folk music. After lunch we will visit the Viniterra winery. As the sun sets behind the Andes Mountains, we return to the hotel. Optional dinner in the Wine Bar with guided wine tasting.

Day 3: After breakfast we depart to visit the Nieto Sentiner and Viña Amalia wineries. Return to the city. Afternoon at leisure. Optional suggested afternoon programmes.

Called by her many fans, “Anna Magnani with voice,” Maria Cangiano, originally from Argentina, has a unique voice within Argentine a new generation of Tango singers. Tango is much more than the lusty and sensuous dance familiar in the United States and around the world. Since the genres birth among the lower classes of Buenos Aires at the turn of the 19th century, it comprised not only music and dance, but a rich lyric tradition. Tango songs portray humankind conflicts from gender issues, ethnic stereotypes, and class conflicts to the plain old heartache of love in all its forms. Trained as an opera singer, Maria Cangiano combines drama and singing in her interpretation of old and new Tango songs as “mini-operas” or melodramatic stories. As the Brooklyn press said, The depth and power of Maria Cangianos woeful, soulful voice brings the nostalgic nature of the music to life.

Her musicians -some of the best exponents of new tango in the United States- are four incredible international performers with a rich background in classical, jazz and tango music: Octavio Brunetti (piano), the winner of the New York Tango International Competition, David Hodges (bandoneon), Pedro Giraudo (Bass), and Victor Prieto (accordion), called the accordion genius (Daily News). The result is an original “global tango,” that mixes traditional and avant-garde tango trends with the musicians’ backgrounds and life experiences.

TANGO & BEYOND, premiered at Joe’s Pub last Spring, is a soulful journey through classic tango songs, its characters and themes from the 1930s to the present. It includes some of the most famous tango songs from the golden age of tango (1930-50s), as well as, the new tango of Astor Piazzolla (1960s). This repertoire shows different aspects of the poetics of tango, ranging from the 1930s well-know sentimental and realistic ones, the 1940-50s more abstract and symbolic to the surrealistic tangos of the 60s and 70s. Maria Cangiano’s soulful interpretation of the songs and the musical arrangements explore the melodramatic nature of the music, as well as, the complex and rich relationship between classic, jazz and tango music.

When Second Wind Dreams, a Canadian organization, contacted Mr. Aquino about granting a dream to octogenarian Mary Witt, Mr. Aquino responded with an enthusiastic yes and set to work. He contacted Russian-born designer Lilia Berzon and asked her if she would be interested in making a special couture gown to be modeled on the runway for a special lady. Today, we are happy to welcome a very special model to our runway at the Champagne Fashion Brunch, so began the producer of the event soon after appeared a model who had been waiting over 71 years from her last casting call to parade down the catwalk.

Mary Witt, 86, had always dreamed of being in a New York fashion show. She wore a beautiful blue-green gown designed by Lilia Berzon. Escorted in her wheelchair by a dashing male model, Ms. Witt waved at everyone as she came down the runway making her long-awaited yet triumphant debut. Mary Witt came to New York at age the age 16 and was turned down for runway modeling because at only 59, she was an inch too short of the agency standard at the time. But in August of 2005, during a whirlwind 24 hours, Ms. Witt was featured on the CBS Sunday Morning show, UPN 9 News, in the New York Daily News and most importantly, she was the darling of the catwalk. She returned to her excited co-residents at a home for seniors in Alabama with a suitcase filled with unforgettable memories along with that spectacular couture gown.

Each time the Champagne Fashion Brunch takes place is a special event. Whether it is a lucky teenager arriving for her Sweet 16 party in a stretch limousine with her 12 best girlfriends and being surprised by photographers snapping away like paparazzi at the giggling teens; or a group of catwalk models pausing to sing a chorus of Happy Birthday to a guest; or even some pre-show entertainment by a Puerto Rican singer who sounds just like Frank Sinatra, this unique event has become a gathering ground for fashionistas from California to Montreal, from Michigan to Dallas and a must-see for many travelers from England, Australia, Japan, Norway, Canada, Argentina and other countries.

Im proud to be part of that community. Its not a competitive thing,” says Terry Wickham of the famed Edmonton Folk Music Festival. “Its a cooperative thing.

Wickham explains that the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has gladly lent its mobile stage and tents to other festivals. What Wickham sees is how everyone benefits from Edmonton being known as Festival City. Its always having a winning season, he says.

Each of the key festivals Wickham mentions brings a different kind of life, culture and fun to the face of Edmonton each summer. Our theme is Yield to Laughter, says Shelley Switzer, Artistic Producer of the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival. Thats what were all about: laughter, smiles and great times at all our Edmonton events! We give you the opportunity to drop your everyday schedule, to not be tied to the clock, to be connected to the fun and to find fun together with friends, as a family or on a date.

The festival has been bringing the laughter to Edmontons downtown streets for 26 years now. Were now into our third generation of people coming to the festival, says Switzer. Its really something to see how our audience has literally grown with us. People who saw it as kids are now bringing their own kids to it!

Audiences arent the only ones who keep coming back. For the artists, this is one of the top ten in the world, says Switzer. There are literally squeals of delight when I phone the artists and invite them to this festival. There are many, many artists who do not work on the street unless they come to perform at the Edmonton festival.

What the Edmonton Folk Music Festival brings to the city is the music in the great natural venue Edmonton has to offer. Unlike at concerts where youre stuck inside, here youre outside in beautiful Gallagher Park and its more laid back, he says. You can watch an artist on the main stage then wander away, have a coffee or sit on a blanket with your own food.

When youre up on the hill, surrounded by green grass and trees and people dancing, smiling, laughing and loving the music, something magical seems to happen. Wickham is right. Some of that magic has to do with the setting. Youre up high on the hills and you can see the whole North Saskatchewan River Valley, which is probably the most beautiful place in the city. Plus, its got a natural slope so you can see over peoples heads and see the stage better. It helps for acoustics too. Its a natural amphitheatre.

The acts themselves are definitely a big draw. The festival sold out in just a day this year. Its the first time thats happened. We had people from as far away as South Africa purchasing tickets this year! says Wickham. Well, you know, for our Wednesday night performance, Van Morrison is playing for that one night. Thats a big deal.

Right after the Edmonton Folk Festival wraps up, the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival brings more culture, charm, and excitement to Festival City but as Julian Mayne, Executive Director sees it, those adjectives are probably a little weak for an event this crazy. How about chaotic fun? he chuckles. That would be a better way to describe the Fringe! Unexpected would be another! After all, the experience people come for is that theyre paying 12 dollars to get into a show and they really dont know what that show is going to be. Its about being open to the challenge and very likely finding something great!

The odds of finding an incredible show are very high. After all, this is the largest Fringe Festival in Canada and this year its even bigger than ever. We have over 185 shows in total on 42 stages and a grand total of over 1500 performances, says Mayne. We have 11 of our traditional lottery venues where we provide technicians, lights and sound for the artists to work in. The rest are Bring-Your-Own-Venues, which are artist-run venues across the city.

This years Fringe features more international shows than usual 39, in fact, coming from Japan, Argentina, the UK, the US and Israel, to name just a few.

Mayne is expecting a banner year for the Fringe. This festival has been selling around 77,000 tickets per year for about a decade. Last year, over 92,000 tickets were sold. Were looking to break 100,000 tickets sold this year and with all of these Bring-Your-Own-Venues, I think well be able to do it!
