The Gotan Project Brings Their Dazzling Tango Electronica to UCLA Live, with L.A.’s daKAH Hip-Hop Orchestra, Oct. 18

(PRWEB) October 10, 2003

LOS ANGELES— The Paris-based Gotan Project brings its soulful and fiery fusion of classic tango melodies, dub and electronica to UCLA’s Royce Hall at

8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003. Presented by UCLA Live, The Gotan Project will be joined by Los Angeles’ 50-plus member daKAH Hip-Hop Symphonic Orchestra. This performance is approximately three hours with an intermission. For tickets call 310-825-2101 or visit http://www.UCLAlive.org.

In addition to Gotan’s principal members, including DJ/producer Philippe Cohen Solal, DJ Christophe Mueller on computers, and tango guitarist Eduardo Makaroff, the lineup features Cristina Vilallonga, vocals; Serge Amico, bandonéon; Arnaldo Zanelli, piano; and Line Kruse, violin.

With sales currently in excess of 600,000 copies worldwide, Gotan Project’s acclaimed “La Revancha Del Tango” was released domestically on Beggars XL in April 2003, featuring their jazz-house hit “Triptico.” Their remix of Sarah Vaughn’s classic, “Whatever Lola Wants” on the “Verve Remixed 2” compilation, featuring today’s greatest DJs remixing the legends of jazz, has enjoyed much airplay on alternative music programs. In addition, their music will be featured in the first episode of “CSI Miami” on CBS this fall.

These French dance producers turned world music crusaders are well on their way to invading the record boxes of DJs around the world. Left-looking spinners including Gilles Peterson, Thievery Corporation, Peter Kruder, UFO, Jazzanova, Rainer Trüby, Herbert and Mr. Scruff have all been championing Gotan’s continent-crossing fusion of tango, dub and beats since their debut single “El Capitalismo Foraneo” was released in January, 2000.

A Los Angeles phenomenon, daKAH is the world’s largest hip-hop orchestra featuring 58 musicians and almost every instrument imaginable. Led by Maestro Double G, daKAH has featured many of hip-hop’s greatest musicians including Macy Gray, Nikka Costa and members of the Breakestra and Black Eyed Peas.

Like a strange, mongrel beast, dance club music will feed off anything: salsa, Brazilian samba, Afrobeat, and now tango. In its native Argentina, the tango is the music of revolution, both sexual and political. It is Argentina’s pop, jazz and its folk music all rolled into one. It’s music that came from the barrios and swept the high societies of Europe in the early 20th century. The second tango invasion came much later: in the late 1970s, when the country’s right wing military junta forced many left wing musicians to flee and find refuge in more liberal cities like Paris.

“There has always been a big tango scene in Paris,” says Gotan founder Philippe Cohen Solal. Indeed the word Gotan itself is just “tango” said in Buenos Aires’ Verlan slang—the Argentinean underworld’s equivalent of old fashioned London argot like backslang. “In Verlan they use the word Gotan to mean tango,” explains Cohen Solal, “there was a tango club in Paris called Gotan in the 60’s.”

Employing some of the finest tango musicians in Europe, Cohen Solal and fellow Gotan projectors Mueller and Makaroff allowed them to freestyle around a theme—then returned to the studio to edit the jams into a seductive tango dub.

“We are not scared of treating or filtering the musicians,” they say. “We’re ‘using’ electronic tricks to make the tango more accessible and that’s why it works. We don’t want to do deep house, with long solos on top of that—it’s really boring. The improvisation has to come back to real melodies and bring melodies back into dance music. We love dub, we love soundtrack music, and we wanted to discover something surprising that nobody would expect.”

With cover versions of the theme from “Last Tango In Paris,” and a dubbed-out take on Frank Zappa’s “Chunga’s Revenge,” this is willfully weird but strangely compelling music that ignores both geographical and musical borders.

Cohen Solal has spent the last 10 years working as a musical supervisor, collaborating with film directors such as Lars Von Trier (on “Europa”), Jean-Baptiste Mondino and Nikita Yolande Zauberman (“Clubbed to Death”), before hooking up with mutual Mueller and veteran Argentinean émigré and musician Makaroff.

A veteran guitarist and singer who has already recorded 12 albums, Makaroff has written and played on film soundtracks and presented TV shows in his native Buenos Aries. He came to Paris in 1990, where he’s fronted the tango group Tango Mano and conducted the orchestra for the Paris tango club Dancing de la Coupole.

“We wanted to work together for a long time,” explains Cohen Solal, “and then Eduardo made me discover the really percussive, groovy side of Argentinean music. We wanted to do something we really loved, with no compromise or thinking about selling to others.”

Drawing upon influences from jazz, funk, European classical, hip-hop, rock and Latin music, daKAH Hip-Hop Orchestra has won critical raves and a loyal following for their recordings and live performances since its inception in 1999. Musically speaking, the sound is like a spice rack, featuring several flavors, aromas, herbs, seasonings, and applications. Orchestral instruments swing on dance rhythms to create the genre-defining sound of symphonic hip-hop. Individuals bring their unique talent to the center stage, while Maestro Double G directs the traffic. Most importantly, they have demonstrated a previously uncharted potential for both the hip-hop house party and the symphony orchestra.

This event is supported by the Henry Mancini Tribute Fund at UCLA.

Tango Art Event Turns Up The Heat - With a Latin Beat.

Ottawa, Canada (PRWEB) January 16, 2004

The Tango’s origins go back to the 19th century, somewhere around the 1870’s, when it was born and developed in the working class suburbs outside the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Today, Tango is a world in itself – sensual, poignant, and often symbolizing Latin culture – we see it represented in music, dance, song, poetry and art. It is an extraordinary phenomenon of customs, celebrated around the world.

In honour of the season, Eleonora Dufault and Janet Wilkinson of Mondo d’ Arte have assembled an intriguing collection of monotypes, watercolours, acrylics, and mixed media from four recognized Argentine artists: Ida Olijavetsky, Juan Manuel Sanchez, Nora Patrich and Violeta Borisonik.

Tango demonstrations will be danced by Brigitte and Francis Caron, owners and instructors at Siempre Tango. They’ve extended a warm welcome to visitors, and, say the Carons, “Those attending the event, who also like to Tango, are invited to remain and dance after 9 pm.”

So whether you love the dance, the art, the people or the just the pulse of all things Latin, the event promises an unusual escape from the cold.

Park anywhere in the Byward Market, and if you hunt patiently, street parking is free on Saturday. Look for a single door on the north side of Rideau (just east of The Bay). You’ll climb 3 flights of stairs, but – it’s worth it. Please bring indoor footwear; they’re “a must” for the hardwood floor.

New School, New York City TANGO & BEYOND: The World of Tango Songs

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) October 16, 2005

Called by her many fans, “Anna Magnani with voice,” Maria Cangiano, originally from Argentina, has a unique voice within Argentine a new generation of Tango singers. Tango is much more than the lusty and sensuous dance familiar in the United States and around the world. Since the genres birth among the lower classes of Buenos Aires at the turn of the 19th century, it comprised not only music and dance, but a rich lyric tradition. Tango songs portray humankind conflicts from gender issues, ethnic stereotypes, and class conflicts to the plain old heartache of love in all its forms. Trained as an opera singer, Maria Cangiano combines drama and singing in her interpretation of old and new Tango songs as “mini-operas” or melodramatic stories. As the Brooklyn press said, The depth and power of Maria Cangianos woeful, soulful voice brings the nostalgic nature of the music to life.

Her musicians -some of the best exponents of new tango in the United States- are four incredible international performers with a rich background in classical, jazz and tango music: Octavio Brunetti (piano), the winner of the New York Tango International Competition, David Hodges (bandoneon), Pedro Giraudo (Bass), and Victor Prieto (accordion), called the accordion genius (Daily News). The result is an original “global tango,” that mixes traditional and avant-garde tango trends with the musicians’ backgrounds and life experiences.

TANGO & BEYOND, premiered at Joe’s Pub last Spring, is a soulful journey through classic tango songs, its characters and themes from the 1930s to the present. It includes some of the most famous tango songs from the golden age of tango (1930-50s), as well as, the new tango of Astor Piazzolla (1960s). This repertoire shows different aspects of the poetics of tango, ranging from the 1930s well-know sentimental and realistic ones, the 1940-50s more abstract and symbolic to the surrealistic tangos of the 60s and 70s. Maria Cangiano’s soulful interpretation of the songs and the musical arrangements explore the melodramatic nature of the music, as well as, the complex and rich relationship between classic, jazz and tango music.

New York Tango Festival Gets New Yorkers Dancing with Strangers

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 25, 2008

The New York Tango Festival gets New Yorkers dancing with strangers in October during Hispanic Heritage Month with two shows of Argentine Tango, and a series of master workshops and milongas (tango dance parties) over Columbus weekend. The Festival is an opportunity to see international tango stars on the New York stage, study with master teachers, and dance with the best tango dancers in the City and from around the world. Last year’s Festival brought together over 1,000 dancers from 41 countries. The festival is produced by Mariela Franganillo, one of the most prominent tango artists in New York.

Thousands of New Yorkers are discovering that tango is the perfect antidote to the endless rush and impersonal face of life in the City because Tango brings people together. Most people know tango from the stage and television, but the true heart of tango is social dancing. Tango connects people intimately in every dance, it brings people into their local community of tango dancers, and it connects travelers with tango communities that have sprouted in cities around the world.

“Tango has a powerful effect on New Yorkers because instead of avoiding eye contact, we dance heart to heart in a hug-like embrace,” said Mariela Franganillo, the Festival producer. “Tango satisfies the basic human need for physical contact and the close mirroring of leader and follower stirs the emotions. Since tango tradition is to change partners after three songs, tango dancers make a lot friends.” There are over 2,000 regular tango dancers in New York and every night you can dance at three or four venues around the City.

“We hold the Festival on Columbus Weekend during Hispanic Heritage Month because it is a time when Latin Americans celebrate the first meeting of European and South American cultures,” said Ms. Franganillo. “I am very proud that a simple dance from my home country of Argentina has spread around the world and brings people together regardless of language, race or culture.”

TANGO NOIR:

The Festival opens October 4 with the premiere of Tango Noir at Peter Norton Symphony Space, sponsored by the World Music Institute. Tango Noir is a new show conceived and directed by Mariela Franganillo that combines humor with the dark side of tango. The performance features four breathtaking dancers: Los Hermanos Macanas (the brothers Enrique and Guillermo Di Fazio), who are one of the hottest acts in the international tango scene and making their New York theatrical debut; Junior Cervila of Tango Argentino fame; and Mariana Parma of Swango and a 2008 US tango champion. The musical ambience is created by singer Hector Pablo Pereyra and an ensemble led by Gustavo Casenave

MASTER WORKSHOPS & MILONGAS:

The heart of the Festival is a series of master workshops and milongas over Columbus Weekend. The Festival brings top tango teachers directly from Buenos Aires to New York including:

Fabian Salas who danced in the movie, the Tango Lesson, and is recognized as one of the fathers of Tango Nuevo, a modern style of tango dancing, with his lovely partner Maria Paz Giorgi;
Pablo Villarraza & Dana Frigoli, stars of The Motorcycle Diaries and one of today’s most important tango couples who are known for the Conceptual Tango Technique and school they created;
Gabriel Andres Misse of the famed show Tango x 2 who is acclaimed for his traditional tango style and his stunning partner Analia Centurion.
These are important teaching and performing couples who rarely visit New York. The Festival gives New Yorkers an opportunity to experience the best tango of Buenos Aires without a plane ride.

TANGO CONNECTION:

The Festival closes October 18-19 when Mariela Franganillo’s company of tango dancers, musicians and a singer perform Tango Connection: A Lover’s Discourse, at Queens Theatre in the Park as part of their Latino Cultural Series and Festival.

This program of love and partnership, which ranges from passionate to comical and from tender to tormented, “conjures some real chemistry in closely linked, swirling duos and taut, whiplash footwork.” – The New York Times

About the New York Tango Festival:

The New York Tango Festival brings world-class tango to the New York stage, classroom and dance floor every Columbus Weekend. Produced by Mariela Franganillo, one of most prominent tango artists in New York, the Festival celebrates the beautiful connection that tango creates between people, by bringing tango stars to the New York stage, bringing the best teachers from Buenos Aires to teach master workshops, and by bringing out New York’s best dancers to milongas (tango dances).

Argentine Tango Social Networking Website Offers Free Tango Instructional Videos and Networking with Tango Dancers Worldwide

Concord, CA (Vocus) July 30, 2009

Phil Seyer, founder of Argentine-tango.com announced today he is offering a free social networking website for those interested in Argentine tango. The site offers tango videos, Argentine tango music, photos, forums, blogs and online chat. A limited quanity of rare instructional tango videos featuring Argentine tango master instructors are also available for purchase.

Some of the tango masters (to name just a few) include: Jaun Bruno and Alcibiades, Esther and Mingo Pugliese, Gustavo Naviera and Olga Besio, Pocho Pizarro and Stella Barba, Lampazo and Pocha, Maria and Roldolfo Cieri, Puppy Castello and Graciela Gonzalez, Petaca, Tete and Siliva, Procho Pizarro and Stella Barba, Pulpo and Luiza.

Rare Instructional videos created and edited by Daniel Trenner are also available for purchase while they last. Daniel Trenner traveled to Argentina many years ago and video taped and preserved the dance steps of scores of tango masters. Daniel Trenner is credited with bringing tango to North America. Before Mr. Trenner’s work, North Americans knew just two kinds of tango: American tango and the so called “International Tango” (which appears to have originated in England.)

Many free online videos, including tango documentaries as well as a short humorous tango drama are available. For example, the film entitled Tanghi Argentini with English subtitles tells the story of an office worker who meets a lady on the Internet and falls in love with her. He makes a date for a milonga (tango dance party), but he doesn’t know how to tango. He begs a coworker to teach him, but is turned down. He continues to importune his coworker and impresses him by running down a flight of stairs to beat him to the ground floor. Enjoy! This film was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short.

Another interested video shows how 3 well-known and very young Japanese band girls (Miyu, Mizuho, Takayo and Maiko from the band ZONE) learn tango in an attempt to be more mature, sophisticated women. Although the video is in Japanese, Mr. Seyer and his Japanese wife Kumiko provide a commentary in English to help viewers understand what is happening.

“My Argentine tango website is not just about selling tango videos,” said Seyer. “People from all over the world are joining because they love Argentine tango and want to connect with others and share their passion for Argentine tango and perhaps learn something new. We have members from countries like Sweden, Portgual, the Phillpines, Korea, Australia, Canada, United States, Lebanon, Greece, and Egypt. New people are joining every day. It seems like Argentine tango is really more international than the so called ‘International tango’.”

Besides free online tango videos, Seyer’s tango website contains blogs with still photo out takes from some of the videos along with written narrative to help explain what is happening in the video. This is a unique feature not found in most other websites that just contain multiple videos without stills or written narrative.

“Members are free to rate videos and ask question or make comments on them. They can also promote their own Argentine tango events, photos, and videos, and link directly to their own websites,” said Seyer.

To learn more or join this Argentine tango website, users may visit Mr. Seyer’s main tango website Argentine tango.com A link to Mr. Seyer’s social networking tango website with free online tango videos is available there.

Tango with the Buddha in Buenos Aires, Argentina, December 11-13, 2009

Buenos Aires, Argentina (PRWEB) October 9, 2009

Come and discover, first hand (and foot!) how both aesthetic experiences of Tango and Zen, done simultaneously, can be a road to inner peace through TangoZen Workshop in Buenos Aires in December 2009.

Recently, Tango was declared part of the world’s cultural heritage by the United Nations.

Tango is the dance of connection, relaxation, and silent communication. Meditation is the art of discovering and reconciling ones own nature. Together, in Tango Zen, they make the music of mind and body, one step at a time.

TangoZen is an innovative yet natural way of meditating while dancing Tango. It is for those who are new or seasoned at meditation, for beginners as well as veteran dancers, and for anyone who is searching for a literal step-by-step method that is both rhythmic and simple to pursue, in order to accomplish a peaceful way of being. In other words, TangoZen can help establish balance, calmness, groundedness, centering, and harmony in mind and body.

TangoZen workshop will be offered on December 11-13 in Buenos Aires. This weekend event is expecting participations by Argentines as well as foreigners mainly from the United States and Europe.

Daily activities of the workshop include morning Walking Dance Meditation, afternoon Tango classes/practicas, and nightly milongas. The workshop will take place in Casa McAuley, approximately 35km from the city of Buenos Aires.

Chan Park, instructor of the workshop, has presented the TangoZen workshops for years in Germany, United Kingdom, Denmark, Italia, Spain, Czech Republic, France, Croatia, Canada, Lithuania, Russia, Latvia, Finland, Holland, Korea, China, Singapore and India.
