Havana Film Festival in New York 2004 celebrates 5 years of sucess April 22 - 29 2004

In its 5th edition, Havana Film Festival in New York (HFFNY) presents 40 films including U.S and N.Y. premieres in Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx. HFFNY will showcase visions of Latin American culture through cutting edge narrative, documentary, short films and classics from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, all of which have English subtitles. Films by and about Latinos in the U.S. will also be featured this year. Festival attendees will have opportunities to attend panel discussions with directors, producers and actors and enjoy Latin American music from local and international talent at nightclubs including Babalú, Copacabana, Nell’s, China Club, Lotus, and SOB’s.

Thursday, April 22, HFFNY launches the week-long festivities by honoring Jacobo Morales at Hostos Center for Arts and Culture (450 Grand Concourse at 149th St. Bronx) with screenings of Linda Sara at 12:30 pm and Lo que le pasó a Santiago at 7 pm. There will be a reception at 5:30 pm and a discussion with the director following each screening. From April 23 to 29, screenings will be held at the Quad Cinema (34 W. 13 St.). Friday, April 23, the N.Y. premiere of Suite Habana opens the festival with screenings at 5 and 7 pm followed by A Havana Night Gala at Babalú (323 West 44 St.) with dinner and live music. Thursday, April 29, the festival closes with the N. Y. premiere of El Carro by Colombian director, Luis Orjuela at 7 pm followed by a closing night party. In Queens, classic Latin American films will be exhibited at the American Museum of the Moving Image (35th Ave at 36th St. Astoria).

Saturday, April 24 there is a reception at 5:30 pm and screening of Quilombo by Brazilian Director Carlos Diegues at 6:30 pm. A post-screening Brazilian Party at Clic (32-04 Broadway at 32nd St. Astoria) is hosted by Bavaria Beer at 9 pm. Sunday, April 25 a Cuban classic, Los Sobrevivientes by acclaimed Director Tomás Gutierrez Alea, screens at 6:30 pm. This year HFFNY celebrates the work of two influential filmmakers: Fernando Pérez and Jacobo Morales. Pérez, one of the most important directors and screenwriters working in cinema today, has astonished audiences worldwide with his innovative and enduring narratives and images.

Each film planned for the retrospective–Madagascar, Hello Hemingway, Omara, La Isla del Tesoro Azul (The Island of Blue Treasure), La Vida es Silbar (Life Is To Whistle), and his latest film, Suite Habana–is a testament to his unusual talent. Jacobo Morales is one of the most influential artists in Puerto Rico. After a successful career in Hollywood, he relocated to Puerto Rico, dedicating himself to the creation of a national film identity. He became a legend when his movie, Lo que le paso a Santiago (Whatever Happened to Santiago), was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film. A central goal of the festival is to showcase both new and classic films and, to that end, HFFNY will premiere features by: Miguel Coyula (Red Cockaroaches, Cuba); Rigoberto Lopez (Scent of Oak, Cuba); Alejandro Chomski (Today and Tomorrow, Argentina), selected to participate at Cannes Film festival’s prestigious program, “Un Certain Regard”; Marcel Sisniega (One or the Other, Mexico); Carlos Gerbase (Tolerance, Brazil); Jorge Furtado (The Man Who Copied, Brazil), awarded the Grand Coral for Best Actor (Lazaro Ramos) at the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana in 2003; Ignacio Ortiz (Bedtime Fairy Tales for Crocodiles, Mexico), winner of 7 Mexican Ariel Awards in 2002; and Elias Jimenez (The House In Front, Guatemala). The Village Gallery in La Jolla Presents the Artwork of Jesi Schiffer; Artist to Host Reception on Thursday, April 20th

From La Jolla Shores to Catalina Island, from Balboa Park to Bird Rock, San Diego landmarks are coming to life in the paintings of celebrated local artist Jesi Schiffer. From April 17 to May 3, the Village Gallery in La Jolla presents more than 40 works by the artist, representing a diverse and colorful approach to Southern Californias most treasured landmarks. In addition, Jesi Schiffer will host an artist reception on Thursday, April 20th from 5:30-9:00pm, featuring art, wine, fabulous appetizers, music, and much more.

Schiffers show at the Village Gallery debuts her new plein aire series of paintings, a difficult wet-on-wet style where the artist masters each painting on location. Schiffer will also be showing several stunning new studio paintings, including the debut of Enchanted Isle, a large painting of Catalina Island.

In addition, Schiffer is also doing commission paintings for wine drinkers, depicting their favorite bottle of wine. Art aficionados simply bring her their favorite bottle, specify colors and size, and the artist does the rest. Guests can also see Schiffer in action (and watch the paintings come to life) as she paints live at the gallery each day of her show.

About Jesi Schiffer

Jesi began painting eight years ago under the instruction of Concetta Antico-Pizzinat. Many of Jesi’s paintings depict her life travels as well as her interests such as surfing, yoga and diving. Her fascination with different cultures and languages and the beauty of exotic regions have taken her to Costa Rica, where she became a scuba dive instructor in Bonaire. She also lived and taught English in Brazil, climbed Macchu Picchu in Peru, and traveled to Boliva, Chile, Argentina, Portugal, Holland, London, France, Spain, Mexico City, Cancun, Cozumel, and Baja California. Jesi is a member of the La Jolla Art Association, the San Diego Art Association, and donates her time and art pieces to the San Diego Burn Institute, Coast Keepers and Surfrider Foundations.

Guitarist Bobby Broom announces the release on April 22, 2008 of a superb live CD with his working trio.

As a major jazz guitarist, Bobby Broom has for many years been hiding in plain sight. Following his Carnegie Hall debut at age 16 with Sonny Rollins, and his first album as a leader at 20, Broom recorded and toured steadily as a valued sideman with artists such as Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Burrell, Dr. John, Charles Earland, and Rollins (whom he rejoined in 2005).

Since the mid-1990s, however, Broom has been focusing much more on his own music, recording a series of critically acclaimed CDs for Criss Cross, Delmark, Premonition, and Origin. His new Origin disc, “The Way I Play (Live in Chicago),” which will be released April 22, captures Broom and his working trio live at their longtime weekly gig, which the Chicago Tribune calls “one of the best ongoing engagements” in the Chicago area.

“It’s flat-out, crazy blowing,” says the guitarist of the results. “And it really is a record of how I approach my instrument, of what’s important to me musically, of where I stand in the jazz order of things.”

The Harlem native, now 47, has been exploring the trio format to rewarding effect not only in his last two CDs, but every Wednesday night for the last ten years at Pete Miller’s Steakhouse in Evanston–the place Broom describes as his “laboratory.” On “The Way I Play,” he delves into a program of jazz standards and American songbook classics–by Charlie Parker, Richard Rodgers, Sonny Rollins, the Gershwins, McCoy Tyner–with trio-mates Dennis Carroll, on bass, and drummer Kobie Watkins.

“We play these kinds of things every week,” Broom says of the tunes, “and I have for my whole life as a jazz guitar player. Now I have both an individual and a group identity to use as a means to approach this music–and all of the music that we play.”

Bobby Broom, Chicago-based since 1984, has another long-standing trio affiliation in the Deep Blue Organ Trio, which one reviewer has deemed “Hammond B3-guitar-drums jazz of the highest order.” Together with organist Chris Foreman and drummer Greg Rockingham, Broom and Deep Blue have to date recorded three albums (and one DVD). Earlier this year, their 2007 Origin disc, “Folk Music,” received a Chicago Music Award as Best Jazz CD. It also burned up the Jazzweek airplay charts, holding at the #2 position for four consecutive weeks (and remaining in the Top 5 for two straight months).

Broom’s own “Song and Dance” CD (Origin) ranked among Jazzweek’s Top 50 airplay records for 2007.

Still a member of Sonny Rollins’s band, Broom will be traveling with Rollins this year to Japan, Korea, Singapore, Australia, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Argentina, and Brazil, as well as making U.S. dates in California, New Jersey, New York, Washington DC, Rhode Island, and close to home in Chicago. He’s also featured in Rollins’s forthcoming Doxy DVD “Live in Vienne,” recorded in concert at a French festival in 2006.

But Bobby’s solo career has never looked or sounded better. His appearance on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz will air in conjunction with the release of “The Way I Play” (feed date April 22). He’s the May cover story for Just Jazz Guitar magazine. And he’ll be part of a Jazz at Lincoln Center event celebrating the legacy of Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian. The Rose Theater concerts on May 2 and 3 will feature Broom alongside Jim Hall, Russell Malone, and Bireli Lagrene, with Lewis Nash driving the rhythm section.

“Guitar gets ignored all too often in the jazz pantheon,” says Broom. “Perhaps it was the last instrument to lead the jazz band historically, but it has not been without its share of innovative players who have contributed to the art improvisationally, compositionally, and in terms of being influential figures at the forefront of the music’s progression. Hopefully, when I play I can speak from the point of view of a beneficiary of the great jazz and jazz guitar work that has come before me.”
