International Speaker and Leader in Education promotes Cultural Understanding of U.S. Latinos

Redondo Beach, CA (PRWEB) March 17, 2004 –Dr. Refugio I. Rochin, the prestigious author, scholar, administrator, fundraiser, social scientist, and leader in higher education has been inducted to the Latino Speakers Bureau. Dr. Rochin is currently the Executive Director of SACNAS, the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Latinos and Native Americans in Science.

Described by his audiences with terms such as dynamic, personable and imaginative, Dr. Rochin has been a trailblazer in U.S. Latino studies and cultural affairs, with a career that clearly speaks of leadership in research and policy issues affecting Latinos. He was the first Director of the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives, among many other achievements. He oversaw a variety of projects at the Smithsonian designed to increase awareness of the role and contributions of Latinos to the history and culture of the United States.

The biggest problem affecting the Latino community is the prevalence of bad information on Latino issues that cause negative stereotyping, he says. “I hope to bring awareness of the Latino community. I focus on the contributions, legacies and profiles of people in the Latino community in an effort to bring the issues more to the public. I think that just by doing that, stereotypes are broken down,” Rochin explains.

Dr. Rochin is well known for his publications and lectures on Latino contributions to U.S. history, economic development, culture, arts, music and science. He has also worked abroad on projects for rural reform and economic development. He was part of the Nobel Laureate Team of Dr. Norman Borlaug, recognized for the so-called “Green Revolution” in Asia. Dr. Rochin’s international experience includes the Peace Corps in Colombia, the Ford Foundation in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Colombia, and consulting in the West Bank and Gaza, Egypt, South Korea, Peru, Argentina, Ecuador, Panama, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and the Caribbean. His list of publications includes more than 100 articles in books, magazines, and professional journals. Recent books include: The Mexicanization of Rural California, 1998, (with Allensworth), and Voices of a New Chicana/o History, 2000, (Edited with D. Valdes).

His keynote conferences in English will include: “U.S. Chicanos and Latinos in U.S. Society: A Historical Perspective”, “The Economics of Chicanos & Latinos in the U.S.”, “The Role and Contribution of Latinos to U.S. Culture”, “U.S. Latinos in the Arts & Culture”, “Latinos in Science: Opportunities & Challenges for the Future” and the much awaited conference that deals with the topic of his new book, “Latino Patriots in Defense of America: From the American Revolution to Afghanistan and Iraq.”

Dr. Rochin has been designated as one of “America’s Top 100 Influential Hispanics,” by Hispanic Business, Inc., and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Northeastern University, Boston in 2000. He is often quoted by the press on Latino issues and in 2002, was featured in the Latin American Times as Hispanic of the Week.

Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz To Lead Cultural Tour of Vietnam, Sponsored by U.S. Department of State

The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz will tour Vietnam November 22-30 under a Cultural and Speakers program sponsored by the U.S. Department of States Bureau of International Information Programs and Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, and the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City. The tour will commemorate the 10th anniversary of normalization of U.S.-Vietnam diplomatic relations. World renowned jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock will lead a group of jazz artists, which include legendary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter, internationally acclaimed vocalist Nnenna Freelon, and the eight gifted young jazz musicians who attend the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at the University of Southern California.

The groups appearances in Ho Chi Minh City will include a “Jazz Thanksgiving” concert at the U.S. Consulate Generals Residence for leaders in the diplomatic, business, and cultural communities; a master class for students at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music; and a performance at the Ben Thanh Theatre. In Hanoi, the group will lead a master class for jazz students at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music; perform for diplomats and cultural figures at the U.S. Embassy; lead a jam session at Minhs Jazz Club; and perform at the Youth Theatre.

“We are once again delighted to work with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to present such an exciting outreach program to the Vietnamese people on this important occasion. I am particularly pleased that we have the next generation of jazz talent from the Institute at the University of Southern California touring with today’s jazz masters, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Nnenna Freelon,” said Karen P. Hughes, the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs in the U. S. Department of State.

According to Institute Chairman Herbie Hancock, “The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz is devoted to introducing people around the world to the uniquely American art form of jazz. We look forward to sharing this music with the people of Vietnam in the spirit of peace and partnership.”

Rob Cutietta, Dean of the Flora L. Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California remarked, “This is a great opportunity for our students to represent the University, the Institute and the U.S. jazz community on this educational and performance tour of Vietnam.”

The Vietnam tour builds on the Institutes longstanding partnership with the U.S. Department of State. In the early part of 1995, the Institute and the United States Information Agency sponsored a six week tour that took a group of Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition winners to seven African nations to perform and conduct educational programs. The Institute worked with the United States Information Agency again in March 1996 to present a tour of India and Thailand, and for a third time in 1998, conducting a tour of Chile, Argentina, and Peru. A highlight of the 1998 trip was a performance at the Summit of the Americas for 34 heads of state from North America, South America, and Central America. This partnership continued in 2001 when the U.S. Department of State sponsored a tour of Egypt. In 2002, 2003, and 2004, the United Nations sponsored a tour of Paris, where the Institutes college students performed with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and T.S. Monk at an “International Day of Philosophy” event presented by UNESCO.

Inspired by Federico Garcia Lorca, flamenco poet and tireless champion of the art form, this years production is a tribute to Lorca himself as well as people all over the world devoted to keeping this priceless world treasure from being lost to the ages.

In the face of globalization, the danger of losing art forms and other elements of living heritages is real. In 2003, United Nations culture and education agency UNESCO began a list of intangible world heritages to preserve and protect. The art of flamenco was recently added to the list on November 16, 2010. The worldwide recognition of flamenco as a precious cultural jewel adds a special significance to this years production and the efforts of all people dedicated to preservation of this immense thousand-year-old treasure studding the spiritual surface of Andalusia, as described by Lorca in his passionate plea at a festival in Granada, Spain in 1922.

Drawing on Lorcas lyrics, passion and complexity of the ancient musical forms, and the mysterious and intuitive power of duende, maestro Granjero leads an impressive international cast of dancers and musicians in making Poema del Cante Jondo a world-class cultural phenomenon not to be missed.
